Teak Basics & Care
Why Is Teak Used On Yachts? And Is A Teak Deck Worth It, Or Am I Signing Up For A Maintenance Headache?
Teak is prized in nautical applications for its natural oil content, exceptional rot-resistance, and excellent non-skid characteristics. It stays cool underfoot and holds up in salt and sun for decades with some basic care. Because of these properties - and its natural beauty - teak adds measurable value to yachts. The easiest way to care for teak is simply to keep it clean; and MARITIME is glad to provide maintenance tips or advise on material options.
How Long Does A Teak Deck Usually Last?
We commonly run into yachts with our MARITIME decks in service for 20+ years. Factors determining a deck’s longevity include the fabrication and installation method, quality and milling of the teak, use of a high-performance deck caulk, and the selected thickness of the teak - for example on a heavily fished charter vessel. Geographic differences can also play a role, as a picnic boat in Maine may be hauled each winter, while a superyacht may be on the water year-round in both the Caribbean and Mediterranean. While teak’s natural durability helps it withstand marine exposure, good drainage, gentle cleaning, and periodic inspection of the wood, seams, and bonding allow a yacht deck to retain its appearance and performance for many years.
Why Is Teak So Much More Expensive Than Other Hardwoods?
Legally sourced, marine-grade teak represents a small fraction of global teak supply, with much of the world’s teak production directed toward furniture and general woodworking. From this select wood supply, a well-made yacht deck is then fabricated with only 100% quarter-sawn lumber, producing tight vertical-grain planks that are more dimensionally stable and resistant to wear. The exceptional natural performance, combined with a limited supply of the highest quality grain, is what makes teak a premium hardwood. Call us and we can show you the differences in wood grades and milling and help determine the grade of teak MARITIME recommends for your application. Across commercial, residential, and marine applications, teak’s upfront cost is rewarded by its remarkable longevity and proven performance.
What Does FEQ Mean, And Does Grade Really Matter That Much?
Originally, FEQ stood for “First European Quality,” but as global sourcing and standards have evolved, the term has become a general designation for top-quality teak. Today’s challenge is the loose application of this classification by wood sellers, and why MARITIME maintains its own sourcing, grading, and in-house milling standards to ensure the best teak for our customers. Our milling process enables our experts to handle each piece, to reveal its true grade and characteristics - and its suitability for your application, e.g. yacht decking, interior flooring, architectural millwork, etc.
How Does Real Teak Compare To The Synthetic Stuff?
Synthetic decking describes a wide range of chemically-based, or chemically-stabilized, deck coverings. Products can vary from a spongy foam or rubbery type matting, to a hard coating applied in liquid form. Some other teak alternatives are derived from wood or cork, and then heavily infused with epoxies. These products typically offer lower upfront cost and can offer a non-skid solution for recreational boats that don’t want teak. Drawbacks of synthetics are how the deck looks and feels, how it handles heat, and how it cannot be easily repaired or refinished down the road. We are wood guys, but have installed synthetics too, and glad to answer any questions to help your decision.
My Teak Has Gone Gray. Did I Ruin It?
Not at all. Teak’s silver-gray tone is a thin layer of surface oxidation caused by natural exposure to the elements, and it does not mean the underlying wood has deteriorated. Many yacht owners deliberately let the teak turn a silver blonde. If you prefer the look of fresh teak, at any time a light sanding can remove this layer to reveal the rich golden color beneath. We also recommend our specially-formulated MARITIME Teak Deck Cleaner to remove stains, clean, and brighten teak safely. What can harm teak and surrounding finishes permanently are caustic 2-part chemical cleaners, so we advise against them.
What If Teak Just Is Not In The Budget? Do I Have Other Options?
We are committed to your success, and we are glad to recommend substitutions and apply our experience to help you value-engineer. MARITIME provides a range of hardwoods including sapele, ipe, wenge, cherry, and walnut, and depending on whether the job is exterior, interior, or commercial – an alternative wood species may serve you better. Call 800-274-TEAK and tell us about the project, and we’ll give you an honest recommendation on what will serve you best.
Teak Decks
Do You Sell Just The Teak, Build Finished Decks, Or Both?
Both. We mill FEQ teak and hardwoods, we fabricate finished custom decks and pre-assembled panels, and we supply raw and milled material on its own. If you have your own carpenter, buy the material or the panels and handle the install yourself. If you want the whole deck built to fit, we do that too. You choose how much of the job is ours. We are here to make our customers successful.
Do You Install The Deck, Or How Does It Arrive?
We build and ship custom teak decks worldwide, with installation services primarily available in South Florida. For projects outside our local service area, your deck arrives pre-assembled and pre-trimmed, ready for your yard or carpenter to make the final fit and bond it to the subdeck.
Every MARITIME deck is thoughtfully engineered as a complete system, with the materials and components needed for a successful installation. We provide technical support throughout the process, and we can connect you with an experienced installation partner in your area. For our OEM customers, we are also available to provide installation support to any employees using our products.

What Makes Teak “Yacht-Grade,” And What Do You Use?
We use FEQ vertical grain teak, not standard-grade stock. FEQ (First European Quality) is heartwood free of knots, cracks, and sapwood. Vertical grain means the growth rings run 60 to 90 degrees to the face, which gives straighter grain lines, more uniform color, greater dimensional stability, and the longest service life. It is the premium cut for decking, and it is what we hand-pick after milling.
Can You Build To My Template Or Match An Existing Deck?
Yes. Bring in or send a template, a drawing, CAD file, or the measurements and photos of the deck you are replacing. We lay the pattern out, pull the measurements, and confirm the design and specification details with you before we build, matching planking layout, king planks, nibbing, margins, and borders. For production builders, we keep your model’s specifications on file for repeat orders.
How Do I Know If My Deck Needs Replacing Or If It Can Just Be Repaired?
The service-life of a teak deck can often be extended, and we are glad to evaluate your deck to determine if the situation is cosmetic or structural, and how we might approach it. Send us some photos or give us a call at 800-274-TEAK. We’ve seen it all, and we’re glad to advise on the repair, re-seaming, or partial replacement of a teak deck.
Flooring & Interiors
Do You Sell Finished Floors, The Panels, Or Just The Material?
All three. We build finished custom floors ready to fit, we supply cabin sole and floor panels for your own carpenter to cut and install, and we sell milled hardwoods, veneers, and teak and holly plywood on their own. You choose how much of the job is ours.
What Is Teak & Holly Flooring, And What Do You Build It With?
It is the classic yacht-sole look: teak planks separated by contrasting light strips of holly. We also build it in sapele and holly, cherry and holly, and walnut and holly, in a wide-plank single-species look that uses maple in place of holly for a lighter feel, and in our alternating-width FlipFlop pattern. All of it is 100 percent solid hardwood, hand-matched for color and grain.
What Is The Difference Between Strip Flooring And Plank Flooring?
Strip flooring is narrower, generally 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches wide, with a classic, more traditional look and more stability. Plank flooring runs wider, 3 to 5 inches or more, for a calmer, more expansive feel with fewer seams, though wider planks can move more in humid conditions. We mill both, and we match the width to the look you want and the scale of the space.
Can You Match An Existing Floor Or Interior?
Yes. This is what we do. We hand-select and match boards for color and grain across an entire floor, and we can match new material to an existing interior. Send photos, a sample, or the species and pattern you are working with and we will match to it.
Can I Use Teak Inside The Boat Too, Or Is It Just For Decks?
Yes, and yacht interiors are a big part of our business. Teak cabin sole flooring is recognized as the classic nautical look, often alternating teak planks with thin white hardwood strips of holly or maple. To complete an interior, we also supply teak for joinery, trim, and veneers. We also provide prefabricated floors and a range of teak components for our OEM boatbuilders and RV coachbuilders. Give us a call at 800-274-TEAK and we can provide recommendations, quote on a design you have, or build you a prototype.
Lumber & Hardwoods
Do I Have To Buy A Whole Deck Package, Or Can I Just Get Lumber?
You can absolutely just buy lumber. A good share of our business is selling raw stock to yacht carpenters, boatbuilders, contractors, and purchasing managers who are doing the carpentry themselves. Have a cut-list or square footage measurement? Send it over and we’ll gladly quote you on the material order, with as much or as little milling as you need.
Vertical Grain Or Flat Grain, Does It Matter?
Vertical (quarter-sawn) grain is cut so the growth rings run perpendicular to the face, which makes it the most dimensionally stable and even-wearing teak that MARITIME supplies. Flat (plain-sawn) grain shows a bolder cathedral figure and is often chosen for the look of a panel or interior. For exterior, moist, and high-traffic applications, MARITIME usually points customers to vertical grain because it moves less with changes in humidity. We will always take a value engineering approach, to provide you the best value and right material for the job.
Which Species Do You Stock Besides Teak?
Besides FEQ teak, MARITIME stocks sapele, ipe, wenge, maple, walnut, American black cherry and white ash, with additional species brought in regularly on request. Every species is available as rough lumber or precision-milled to your exact specifications. We also supply marine plywood, including teak and teak-and-holly faced plywood. From our mill in Stuart, Florida, MARITIME ships our hardwoods to boat builders, refit yards, and architectural contractors worldwide.
Do You Carry Marine Plywood?
Yes, marine plywood is a popular product that MARITIME supplies, including teak and teak-and-holly plywood. We carry it in the common sheet sizes and thicknesses that marine and architectural projects call for, and we can source specific cores or faces to match a job, just let us know. When MARITIME is milling solid stock for you, the plywood species can be requested to match the milled lumber, so the finished work reads as one material. Our marine-grade plywood ships from our Stuart, Florida yard alongside the rest of your order.
Can You Mill To My Spec Or Match An Existing Board?
Custom milling is at the core of every MARITIME job, so lumber can be supplied rough, surfaced, edged or precision-milled to your exact specification. We can replicate a profile or pattern you send us, resaw special wood you bring in, or search our vast inventory when a specific board has to be matched or provided in multiples. We also work with builders and designers via email, and from a photo MARITIME can match the species, grain and color of an existing floor, deck, or interior. This board-by-board matching is what refit yards and independent carpenters count on when a repair has to disappear into the original work.
Where Does Your Teak Come From, And Is It Compliant?
MARITIME sources teak and hardwoods independently and globally, selecting only the logs and lumber that meet our own standards and grade. All material is 100% Lacey Act compliant, backed by a responsible supply chain and chain of custody. MARITIME handles the import and export paperwork, phytosanitary requirements, and customs clearance so a customers’ order moves cleanly to its destination. That compliance protects our builder customers whether the wood travels across the country or across the world from our Stuart, Florida facility.
Why Don’t You Publish Your Lumber Prices?
Premium hardwood pricing depends on species, grade, dimensions, available lengths, quantities, and milling requirements. Rather than publish generic prices that may not reflect your needs, MARITIME provides the most competitive price tailored to your specifications. We draw on our extensive experience, large inventory, and daily production schedule to find opportunities to deliver the best possible value to our customers.
Getting a quote is easy. Just tell us a little about your project, including the wood species, approximate dimensions, quantities, and any special milling requirements. Don’t have all the details? Our team can help you select the right materials and specifications to get the best value for your project, without ever compromising on quality.

Architectural & Onshore
Do You Work Directly With Architects And Designers?
Yes. We work directly with architects, interior designers and general contractors on hotels, restaurants, spas, retail stores, private clubs and private homes, from a single bar top to a full building’s flooring.
What Can You Make For An Architectural Project?
Flooring, countertops, bar tops, restaurant table tops, cutting boards and range covers, exterior decking, pool decks, siding, railings, grates, stair treads and risers, veneers, ceilings and wainscoting.
Why Use Marine-Grade Teak In A Building?
Material that survives salt water, sun and a flexing hull holds up easily to heavy commercial foot traffic and coastal humidity. FEQ teak is dense, stable and naturally oily, so it resists water, rot and wear.
Do You Install On Site?
We mill, fabricate and ship ready to install. Installation is handled by your contractor or installer, and we are glad to advise them on acclimation, adhesives and finishing.
Custom Carpentry
Do You Build Custom Teak Grating?
Yes. We build custom teak grating to your exact dimensions for showers, wet areas, saunas, entryways, and cockpit and deck fittings, matching the spacing, border profile, and radius your space needs.
Can You Match A Broken Or Discontinued Part?
Yes. Bring us a drawing, a photo, a pattern, or the broken original and we will reproduce the piece so it fits your existing build exactly.
Do You Sell Materials And Components To Other Fabricators?
Yes. We supply hardwood components and teak stock to boatbuilders, coachbuilders, RV manufacturers, and completion centers, for a single order or a repeat production run.
Which Industries Do You Work With?
Marine and yacht builders, plus coachbuilders, aviation completion centers, cruise lines, premium RV manufacturers, restaurants and private clubs, and spa and wellness projects.
How Large Or Small Can My Order Be?
Anything from a single specialty component to a full production run. No project is too big or too small.
What Products Can You Fabricate?
Teak grates and grating, wall panels, rails and railings, step stools, dock boxes, aft deck table tops, stair treads, and cockpit soles, in teak or the hardwood your project calls for.
Teak Deck Caulk, Epoxy & Cleaner
How Fast Does MARITIME Teak Deck Caulk Cure?
It forms a tack free skin in 15 to 20 minutes and can be walked on the next day. It cures reliably in all climate conditions, which is why we use it in our own production from the arctic to the equator.
Do I Need A Primer, And Will It Stick To Oily Teak?
No primer is required. The caulk is formulated for maximum adhesion to teak, including naturally oily teak, and it stays permanently flexible so it moves with the wood.
What Is The Difference Between The Regular And SLOW Activator Epoxy?
The Installation Epoxy comes in a 2 gallon kit, one gallon of base resin and one gallon of activator, in a regular or a SLOW activator version. Choose SLOW for hot conditions or larger pours where you need more working time, and regular for cooler conditions or a faster turnaround.
Do I Have To Screw The Deck Down?
No. The epoxy beds the deck to the hull, so the deck is bonded rather than fastened. That means no screws driven into the subdeck and no permanent holes in the fiberglass.
Are The Caulk And Epoxy Sold As A System Or Separately?
Both. Many pros use the full system, others use a single product. We also ship caulk and epoxy alongside our deck kits so the install material arrives with the deck.
Is The PRO2 Cleaner Safe To Use?
PRO2 is a one-step teak deck cleaner that passed a cruise line's onboard safety review and its standards across all ports of call. Unlike acidic teak cleaners that attack the wood, PRO2 lifts dirt gently. Contact us for the current safety data sheet.
